Life Shield Series

The Life Shield Series, my visual vocabulary of reinvented symbols is my own unique visual language, some not being truly identifiable but many are universal shapes inspired by pictographic images made by different indigenous peoples, I have taken their symbolic shapes and meaning and transformed them into my own design language which then can be interpreted by the viewer.

The Hat- Self Portraits

Memento Mori The Hat Series These photographs are actual self portraits of me wearing The Memento Mori Hat. Originally, I had given this hat to my Mama for her to wear as a sun shield, to protect her damaged light sensitive eyes from the hard glare of the Texas sun. When she died in 2005, I brought the hat back to NJ, and there it sat on a shelf until I was invited to a hat party. I decided to transform the basic hat into a collage of elements which would be a living memorial to her: Memento Mori (a reminder of death or mortality). Included on the hat is a photograph of Mama and me (I am about 4 years old), parts of my wedding veil, and many other elements. The hat looks like it would be at home in the early part of the 20th century, feathers and all.
